Interview with Stavros Platitsa Greek Ski Legend

STAVROS PLATISTAS
The living legend of Greek skiing.

A few days ago (20.1.2019) at the Seli Ski Center, we had the pleasure and honor to speak once again with the legend of the Greek skiing, Mr. Stavros Platitsa, the teacher, as all his friends call the sport and especially the northern greece.

At our meeting, he urged us, all of us, the younger ones, to want to learn the right skiing to trust and use teachers if we want to learn the sport quickly and safely.

People with the knowledge and experience and ability to transmit that will make us overcome our phobia and ski comfortably after 3-4 lessons.

Of course, we not only stayed at the tips but also reminded us of the story of his long-term involvement with the sport, which we quote below.

Reading it, we think you all will agree, that such a resume is without a doubt the living legend of the sport!

Stavros Platitsas first skied in 1940 with the so-called improvised ski barrels made of broken wine barrels.

Normally skiing first wore on his feet in 1949, when the LOCs. they camped at Seli (1949-51).
From 1953 – 1961 he was a member of the National Ski Team. Then for 10 years he became a coach of the National Team and a trainer of LOCs.

He has been instrumental in spreading the sport in Greece as he has trained many mountaineering clubs across the country.
With the help of the then King and sponsored 10 pairs of skis he traveled all over the country and trained people in Florina, Metsovo, Drama, Volo, and elsewhere.

In 1965, with the help of EOT, he founded the first ski school in the country, in Seli. Since then and until today it has introduced tens of thousands of Greeks to skiing and continues to ski even today, after 54 years since the school was founded!
